Mangamaunu Bay is a wild, windswept slice of the Kaikōura coastline where the Southern Alps tumble straight into the Pacific. This long, dark-sand beach is anything but crowded – you’ll likely share it only with seabirds and the occasional surfer chasing the reliable swell. The bay’s raw beauty, framed by the Seaward Kaikōura Range, makes it a mesmerising stop on the drive between Christchurch and Kaikōura.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow at least half a day to appreciate Mangamaunu Bay and its surroundings. A few hours are enough for a beach stroll, seal spotting, and a surf check, but you could easily stretch it into a full day by combining with the Kaikōura Peninsula walk and a seafood lunch in town. If you’re surfing, plan around the tide – the break works best on a mid-to-high incoming tide.
