Lewis Pass Scenic Reserve
Straddling the spine of the Southern Alps, Lewis Pass Scenic Reserve is a wild, untamed slice of New Zealand's backcountry. This is where the beech forest meets alpine tussock, and the air smells of moss and minerals. The main highway cuts through, but once you step onto a trail, it's just you, the kea, and the sound of rushing water. It's a place for those who want to feel small in a big landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- Marble Hill Walkway – A short, easy loop through ancient beech forest with interpretive signs about the local flora and the area's geological history.
- Lewis Pass Summit Walk – A steep but rewarding climb (1–2 hours return) to the pass summit with panoramic views of the alpine ranges and the Canterbury Plains stretching east.
- St James Walkway – For serious trampers, this 66 km multi-day route starts here, crossing the Lewis Pass and traversing pristine valleys, tarns, and high country stations.
- Thermal Springs – A soak in the natural hot pools at the Lewis Pass Thermal Springs, a perfect post-hike treat (no facilities, so bring your own towel).
- Birdlife – Keep an eye out for kea (alpine parrots) and the elusive blue duck (whio) along the rivers.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travelers pass through in an hour or two on a drive between Hanmer Springs and the West Coast, but the reserve rewards a half-day stop. If you're keen on a short walk (like the Summit Walk), budget 3–4 hours. For the St James Walkway, plan 3–5 days. The reserve is best visited in summer (Dec–Feb) when alpine flowers bloom and snow is absent from the trails.
