Straddling the Main Divide in the Southern Alps, Lewis Pass National Park is a rugged wilderness of beech forests, alpine tarns, and dramatic peaks. This lesser-visited park offers a serene escape from busier tourist spots, with excellent hiking, birdwatching, and hot pools. The pass itself is a high alpine saddle at 864 m, connecting Canterbury and the West Coast via State Highway 7, making it a perfect stop on a South Island road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Marble Hill Walkway – a short, family-friendly loop through ancient beech forest with interpretive signs about the area’s geology and Māori history.
- Lewis Pass Hot Pools – natural thermal pools beside the Lewis River, ideal for a relaxing soak after a day’s hike (free and open year-round).
- St James Walkway – a 66 km multi-day tramp through alpine meadows, river valleys, and mountain passes, offering backcountry huts and stunning views of Mount Technical and Mount Una.
- Lake Daniell – a scenic 2–3 hour return walk to a tranquil alpine lake surrounded by silver beech forest; perfect for a half-day outing.
- Birdlife – keep an eye out for kea, kererū, tomtits, and the elusive great spotted kiwi (best heard at dawn/dusk).
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day exploring the park’s short walks and hot pools, but if you plan to tackle the St James Walkway or do serious tramping, allow 3–5 days. For a road trip stop, 2–3 hours is enough for a quick soak and a short walk. The park is open year-round, though alpine passes can be icy in winter (June–August) – check road conditions before heading in.
