Lake Tekapo is a stunning turquoise lake in the Mackenzie Basin, framed by the Southern Alps. Its surreal color comes from glacial rock flour suspended in the water. The lakeside Church of the Good Shepherd is one of New Zealand's most photographed spots, and at night, the sky above is part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, offering world-class stargazing.
Highlights & What to See
- Church of the Good Shepherd – Iconic stone church with lake and mountain views; arrive early to avoid crowds.
- Mount John Observatory – Drive or hike up for panoramic views and night-sky tours; book Earth & Sky stargazing.
- Lake Tekapo Walkway – Easy trail along the lake shore, perfect for sunrise or sunset photos.
- Tekapo Springs – Hot pools with lake views, plus ice skating in winter.
- Astro Café – Perched atop Mount John, it claims to be the best coffee with a view in New Zealand.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one night to experience both daylight beauty and dark-sky stargazing. If you're tight on time, a half-day stop is enough for the church and a short walk. For hikers or stargazers, consider two nights to also explore the nearby Mount Cook area.
