Kaiteriteri is the golden gateway to Abel Tasman National Park, a place where the Tasman Sea meets impossibly clear, turquoise waters and soft golden sand. This small beachside settlement on the South Island's northern coast feels like a slice of the South Pacific, with a relaxed, barefoot vibe that lures travellers for days on end. The sheltered bay is perfect for swimming, kayaking, and lazing on the beach, while the nearby national park offers some of New Zealand's best coastal walks and water-taxi adventures.
Highlights & What to See
- Kaiteriteri Beach: The main beach is a stunner – golden sand, calm waters, and pohutukawa trees that frame the shore. Swim, paddleboard, or simply soak up the sun.
- Abel Tasman National Park: The star attraction. Take a water taxi to remote beaches like Torrent Bay or Anchorage, then walk back along the Abel Tasman Coast Track. Spot seals, dolphins, and native birds.
- Split Apple Rock: A curious granite boulder that looks like a cracked apple, just off the coast. Kayak or paddleboard out for a closer look.
- Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park: A network of trails through native forest, suitable for all levels. Rent a bike and enjoy the flowy singletrack with ocean views.
- Wainui Falls: A short walk through lush bush leads to this powerful 20-metre waterfall in the national park. Refreshing on a hot day.
- Sea Kayaking: Paddle along the stunning coastline, exploring hidden coves and sea caves. Guided trips often include wildlife sightings.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors base themselves in Kaiteriteri for 2–3 days. This allows for a full day exploring Abel Tasman National Park (water taxi one way, walk the other), a day relaxing on the beach or biking, and a half-day for kayaking or visiting Wainui Falls. If you're short on time, a single overnight stay can still give you a taste – arrive early, do a half-day walk, and enjoy sunset on the beach.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Marahau: The other main gateway to Abel Tasman, with a different vibe – more backpacker-oriented, with access to the southern end of the park.
- Motueka: A lively town 15 minutes south, with excellent cafés, craft breweries, and the Motueka Sunday Market. Stock up on supplies here.
- Nelson: The sunny city at the top of the South Island, 50 minutes away. Visit the World of WearableArt museum, the Saturday market, and nearby wineries.
- Abel Tasman Coast Track: If you have 3–5 days, hike the full 60 km track from Marahau to Wainui Bay, with stays in DOC huts or private lodges.
- Golden Bay & Farewell Spit: A scenic drive over Takaka Hill leads to wilder beaches, the Pupu Springs, and the bird sanctuary at Farewell Spit.
