Kaikōura is a dramatic meeting of mountain and sea on the east coast of New Zealand’s South Island, where the rugged Seaward Kaikōura Range plunges into the Pacific. This small town is world-famous for its incredible marine life, thanks to the deep Hikurangi Trench just offshore that funnels nutrient-rich currents, attracting sperm whales, dusky dolphins, and fur seals year-round. The town itself has a relaxed, coastal vibe, with excellent seafood restaurants and a strong Māori heritage.
Highlights & What to See
- Whale watching – Kaikōura is one of the best places on Earth to see sperm whales; boat tours run year-round, with sightings almost guaranteed.
- Dusky dolphin encounters – Swim or cruise with large pods of acrobatic dusky dolphins in the bay.
- Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway – A stunning coastal walk (about 2 hours return) offering views of the ocean, seal colonies, and the mountains.
- Seal colony at Point Kean – See New Zealand fur seals lounging on the rocks, often just metres from the path.
- Kaikōura Museum – A small but fascinating museum detailing the region’s Māori history, whaling past, and the 2016 earthquake.
- Fyffe House – The oldest surviving building in Kaikōura, built from whale vertebrae and native timber.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least two full days in Kaikōura. Day one is best spent on a whale-watching tour and exploring the peninsula walkway. Day two allows for a dolphin swim or a scenic flight over the mountains and coastline. If you’re driving between Christchurch and Picton, an overnight stop is ideal, but three days gives you time to truly relax and enjoy the seafood.
