Kaikōura is a dramatic meeting of mountain and sea on the east coast of New Zealand’s South Island, where the rugged Seaward Kaikōura Range plunges into the Pacific. This small town is world-famous for its incredible marine life, thanks to the deep Hikurangi Trench just offshore that funnels nutrient-rich currents, attracting sperm whales, dusky dolphins, and fur seals year-round. The town itself has a relaxed, coastal vibe, with excellent seafood restaurants and a strong Māori heritage.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan at least two full days in Kaikōura. Day one is best spent on a whale-watching tour and exploring the peninsula walkway. Day two allows for a dolphin swim or a scenic flight over the mountains and coastline. If you’re driving between Christchurch and Picton, an overnight stop is ideal, but three days gives you time to truly relax and enjoy the seafood.
