Kahurangi National Park is New Zealand's second-largest national park, a vast wilderness of ancient forests, alpine herb fields, and dramatic marble karst landscapes. This rugged and remote park offers some of the country's best multi-day hikes, including the famous Heaphy Track, one of the Great Walks. It's a place for true adventurers seeking solitude and pristine nature – think limestone arches, glowworm caves, and the haunting call of the kiwi.
Highlights & What to See
- Heaphy Track – One of New Zealand's Great Walks, this 78.4 km trail traverses from the Kahurangi coastline over the alpine tops and down through lush forests to the Tasman Sea. It's a 4–6 day tramp (or mountain bike ride in season) with well-equipped huts.
- Oparara Basin – A stunning area of limestone arches, caves, and pristine rainforest. The Oparara Arch is one of the largest natural arches in the Southern Hemisphere, and the nearby Moria Gate Arch is equally impressive.
- Mount Arthur – A classic day hike or overnight tramp to the summit (1,795 m) offering panoramic views of the park. The track passes through alpine herb fields and past the spectacular Flora Saddle.
- Wangapeka Track – A challenging 5-day tramp through remote valleys and over the Hope Saddle, with opportunities to see rare alpine plants and birdlife.
- Kahurangi coastline – The Heaphy Track ends at Kohaihai, where you can explore wild beaches, sea caves, and the dramatic mouth of the Heaphy River. Short walks like the Fenian Track offer coastal views.
- Limestone karst landscapes – The park is honeycombed with marble and limestone formations, including sinkholes, caves, and underground rivers. The Tablelands area is a must for geology buffs.
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly experience Kahurangi, plan at least 3–4 days for a multi-day tramp like the Heaphy or Wangapeka Track. If you're short on time, a day trip from Nelson or Motueka can include the Oparara Basin and a short walk to the coast – but you'll only scratch the surface. For a balanced visit, allow 2–3 days to explore the highlights near the park boundaries, plus a night in a backcountry hut.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Nelson – The gateway city to the park, with a vibrant arts scene, craft breweries, and the iconic Centre of New Zealand walk.
- Abel Tasman National Park – New Zealand's smallest national park, famous for golden beaches, kayaking, and the Abel Tasman Coast Track. Combine with Kahurangi for a diverse South Island nature experience.
- Golden Bay – A laid-back coastal region with Farewell Spit, Wharariki Beach (with its seal colonies), and the artsy town of Takaka. It's the western access point for the Heaphy Track.
- Motueka – A sunny town known for its hop fields, craft beer, and as a launchpad for both Abel Tasman and Kahurangi. Try the local hops at a brewery tour.
- Murchison – A small town on the Buller River, popular for whitewater rafting and jet-boating. It's a good stop en route from the West Coast to Kahurangi.
