Golden Bay, on the western side of the Abel Tasman National Park, is a slice of coastal paradise with golden sands, turquoise waters, and a relaxed, bohemian vibe. This is where New Zealanders come to escape the crowds, unwind in natural hot springs, and explore some of the country's most stunning beaches and walking tracks. The main settlement, Tākaka, is a laid-back hub with quirky galleries, craft breweries, and a strong community spirit.
Highlights & What to See
- Te Waikoropupū Springs – One of the clearest freshwater springs in the world, with incredible visibility and a sacred Māori heritage.
- Wharariki Beach – A wild, windswept beach with sea caves, arches, and a resident colony of fur seals; accessible via a short walk from the carpark.
- Abel Tasman National Park – Golden Bay is the western gateway to this iconic park; take a water taxi to secluded beaches or walk sections of the Abel Tasman Coast Track.
- Farewell Spit – A vast sand spit stretching 35 km into the Tasman Sea, a protected nature reserve and important bird habitat. Join a guided tour to explore the lighthouse and gannet colony.
- Pupu Hydro Walkway – A short, easy walk through native forest to a historic hydroelectric scheme, with a picturesque waterfall and swimming hole.
- Tākaka Hill – The drive over this marble mountain offers spectacular views and leads to the Ngarua Caves, where you can see glowworms and ancient fossils.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least two full days to appreciate Golden Bay's highlights. Spend the first day exploring Te Waikoropupū Springs and Wharariki Beach, then dedicate the second to a water taxi trip into Abel Tasman National Park or a Farewell Spit tour. If you have more time, add a day for relaxed beach-hopping, kayaking, or visiting local art studios. Golden Bay is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace – don't rush it.
