Franz Josef Glacier is a dramatic river of ice that plunges from the Southern Alps into temperate rainforest, creating one of New Zealand's most accessible glacial landscapes. The Māori name, Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere, tells the story of a grieving woman whose tears formed the glacier. Here, you can walk right up to the terminal face or take a helicopter flight onto the ice itself.
Highlights & What to See
- Glacier Valley Walk: A 1.5-hour return walk from the car park to the terminal face, with viewing platforms offering close-up views of the ice and waterfalls cascading from the cliffs.
- Heli-Hike: A helicopter flight onto the glacier followed by a guided hike among crevasses and ice formations – an unforgettable experience.
- Franz Josef Hot Pools: Soak in natural hot pools surrounded by rainforest, perfect after a day on the ice.
- Lake Mapourika: A serene lake nearby, ideal for kayaking or a peaceful stroll with reflections of the glacier.
- West Coast Wildlife Centre: See kiwi birds and learn about the region's unique ecology.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one full day here. If you're short on time, the Glacier Valley Walk takes 2–3 hours round trip, while a heli-hike requires a half-day. For a relaxed pace, stay overnight and add a visit to the hot pools or a kayak trip on Lake Mapourika.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Fox Glacier: A 20-minute drive south, with its own valley walk and heli-hikes – often less crowded.
- Lake Matheson: Famous for mirror reflections of Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, a short detour near Fox Glacier.
- Whataroa: A small town with white heron (kotuku) nesting sanctuary tours.
- Okarito: A coastal lagoon ideal for kayaking and birdwatching, with views of the glacier from a distance.
- Hokitika: A historic gold-rush town with pounamu (greenstone) workshops and a wild beach, about 1.5 hours north.
