Fox Glacier is one of New Zealand's most accessible and dramatic glaciers, descending from the Southern Alps into temperate rainforest just a few kilometres from the Tasman Sea. This living river of ice offers an unforgettable encounter with the raw power of nature, set within the wild and beautiful West Coast region.
Highlights & What to See
- Fox Glacier Terminal Face Walk – A short, easy walk from the car park brings you to a viewing point where you can see the glacier's towering, crevassed ice face up close. The track winds through lush rainforest and across a rocky riverbed, with the ever-present roar of meltwater.
- Heli-Hike – For the full experience, take a scenic helicopter flight onto the glacier itself. Landing on the ice, you'll strap on crampons and explore deep blue ice caves, crevasses, and seracs with a knowledgeable guide. It's a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
- Lake Matheson – Just 5 km from Fox Glacier village, this mirror-like lake offers iconic reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. The easy loop walk around the lake takes about 1.5 hours and is best done at dawn or dusk for calm, clear reflections.
- Gillespies Beach – A wild, black-sand beach 20 minutes' drive from Fox Glacier, where you can see the rugged coastline, seal colonies, and remnants of gold-mining history. It's a great spot for a peaceful stroll or a picnic.
- Fox Glacier Village – The small, friendly village has a handful of cafes, a general store, and accommodation options. It's the perfect base for your glacier adventures and a great place to unwind after a day on the ice.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one full day at Fox Glacier, which allows time for a heli-hike (around 3–4 hours) and a visit to Lake Matheson. If you're short on time, you can still do the terminal face walk (1–2 hours) and see the lake in half a day. For a more relaxed pace, consider staying two nights to also explore nearby beaches and walking tracks.
