Castle Hill, also known as Kura Tawhiti, is a surreal landscape of massive limestone boulders scattered across a grassy hillside in the Canterbury high country. This geological wonderland, sacred to Ngāi Tahu, offers an otherworldly setting for walking, bouldering, and photography. The area is easily accessible from State Highway 73, making it a perfect stop on a journey between Christchurch and the West Coast.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 1–2 hours to explore the main boulder field and take photos. If you're bouldering, plan for half a day or more. The site is an ideal 30-minute leg-stretcher stop on a longer road trip, but it's worth lingering longer if time permits.
