Cape Foulwind, on the wild West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, is a place of dramatic coastal beauty and rich maritime history. Despite its off-putting name—bestowed by Captain Cook in 1770 due to the blustery conditions—this headland offers spectacular views of the Tasman Sea, a thriving fur seal colony, and a lighthouse that has guided mariners since 1876. The wind here is indeed a constant companion, but it only adds to the raw, elemental feel of the landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- Cape Foulwind Walkway: An easy 3.4 km (one way) coastal track from the carpark to the lighthouse, with stunning clifftop views and abundant birdlife.
- Fur Seal Colony: A large breeding colony of New Zealand fur seals (kekeno) is easily viewed from a boardwalk near the walkway's start—pups are common in summer.
- Cape Foulwind Lighthouse: The historic lighthouse, automated in 1925, is a photogenic landmark with interpretive panels about the area's shipping history.
- Tauranga Bay: A beautiful sandy beach just south of the cape, popular for surfing and beach walks (note: seals may be present).
- Viewing Platforms: Several platforms along the walkway offer prime spots for whale watching (seasonal) and storm watching.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate 1–2 hours for the walk and seal viewing. The full return walk takes about 1.5 hours at a leisurely pace, plus time for photography and seal-spotting. It's a perfect short stop on a West Coast road trip—combine with a visit to Punakaiki's Pancake Rocks (45 minutes north) or the historic town of Westport (15 minutes south).
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Westport: The nearest town, with cafes, the Coaltown Museum, and the starting point for the Buller Gorge jetboat rides.
- Punakaiki & Pancake Rocks: Iconic limestone formations and blowholes, 45 minutes north via State Highway 6.
- Charleston: A former gold-mining settlement with the popular Nile River Glowworm Cave and rainforest walks.
- Buller Gorge: Scenic river gorge with a swingbridge, jetboating, and the famous 'Buller Gorge Swing' adventure activity.
- Karamea: Gateway to the Heaphy Track (one of New Zealand's Great Walks) and the Oparara Basin Arches, about 1.5 hours north.
