Cape Foulwind

Cape Foulwind, on the wild West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, is a place of dramatic coastal beauty and rich maritime history. Despite its off-putting name—bestowed by Captain Cook in 1770 due to the blustery conditions—this headland offers spectacular views of the Tasman Sea, a thriving fur seal colony, and a lighthouse that has guided mariners since 1876. The wind here is indeed a constant companion, but it only adds to the raw, elemental feel of the landscape.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate 1–2 hours for the walk and seal viewing. The full return walk takes about 1.5 hours at a leisurely pace, plus time for photography and seal-spotting. It's a perfect short stop on a West Coast road trip—combine with a visit to Punakaiki's Pancake Rocks (45 minutes north) or the historic town of Westport (15 minutes south).
