Settled on the shores of a spectacular volcanic harbour, Akaroa is a slice of French New Zealand — literally. Founded by French whalers in the 1840s, this charming village on Banks Peninsula still retains a Gallic flair, with street names like Rue Lavaud and a strong local pride in its croissant-and-baguette heritage. The harbour, a flooded volcanic crater, is a stunning deep blue, framed by green hills and dotted with dolphins. Akaroa feels a world away from Christchurch, yet it's just a scenic 90-minute drive — perfect for a day trip or a longer stay.
Highlights & What to See
- Harbour Cruise — Spot the world's smallest and rarest dolphins, the Hector's dolphin, on a cruise around the caldera. You'll also see seals, penguins, and volcanic sea cliffs.
- French and British history — Visit the Akaroa Museum to learn about the area's dual colonial past, then wander past the historic wooden cottages and the quaint Church of St Peter.
- Giants House — A whimsical mosaic-covered garden and gallery created by artist Josie Martin, full of colourful sculptures and stunning harbour views.
- Banks Peninsula Track — A multi-day walking trail (or shorter sections) through native bush, along dramatic coastline, and across sheep farms. The views over the crater rim are unforgettable.
- Food and wine — Akaroa has a surprisingly sophisticated food scene. Try the Akaroa Fish & Chips for fresh local catch, or book a table at Bully Hayes for waterfront dining. The local cheesery and lavender farm are also worth a stop.
- L'Aube French Bakery — Grab a flaky croissant or pain au chocolat — arguably the best this side of the Alps.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors come as a day trip from Christchurch, which gives you enough time for a harbour cruise, a wander through the village, and lunch. But to truly soak up the atmosphere, spend one or two nights. This lets you do a morning kayak on the harbour, hike part of the Banks Peninsula Track, and enjoy a relaxed dinner without rushing back. If you're self-driving, the road from Christchurch via the Summit Road is stunning — allow an hour and a half each way, plus stops for photos.
