Settled on the shores of a spectacular volcanic harbour, Akaroa is a slice of French New Zealand — literally. Founded by French whalers in the 1840s, this charming village on Banks Peninsula still retains a Gallic flair, with street names like Rue Lavaud and a strong local pride in its croissant-and-baguette heritage. The harbour, a flooded volcanic crater, is a stunning deep blue, framed by green hills and dotted with dolphins. Akaroa feels a world away from Christchurch, yet it's just a scenic 90-minute drive — perfect for a day trip or a longer stay.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors come as a day trip from Christchurch, which gives you enough time for a harbour cruise, a wander through the village, and lunch. But to truly soak up the atmosphere, spend one or two nights. This lets you do a morning kayak on the harbour, hike part of the Banks Peninsula Track, and enjoy a relaxed dinner without rushing back. If you're self-driving, the road from Christchurch via the Summit Road is stunning — allow an hour and a half each way, plus stops for photos.
