Kaiteriteri is the golden gateway to Abel Tasman National Park, where impossibly clear turquoise water laps against crescent beaches of fine golden sand. This tiny beachside settlement on the South Island’s northern coast feels like a secret slice of the Pacific, with a laid-back vibe that makes you want to kick off your shoes and stay. The sheltered bay is perfect for swimming, kayaking, and launching into one of New Zealand’s Great Walks.
Highlights & What to See
- Kaiteriteri Beach – The main beach is a stunner: calm, warm, and safe for swimming, with a grassy reserve perfect for picnics. Rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard to explore the coves.
- Abel Tasman National Park – The park’s main access point, with water taxis departing regularly for day walks or multi-day tramps. The Coast Track is world-class, but even a short walk to Anchorage or Torrent Bay is rewarding.
- Split Apple Rock – A curious granite boulder split perfectly in half, just off the coast. Best seen on a kayak tour or a scenic boat cruise.
- Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park – A network of purpose-built trails for all levels, from flowy beginner loops to technical descents with bay views.
- Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle – A must-do: hop on a water taxi to remote beaches like Awaroa or Totaranui, then walk back along the track. The commentary is excellent.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal: one day to explore Kaiteriteri Beach and the mountain bike park, a full day for a water taxi and walk in Abel Tasman, and a third if you want to kayak or take a longer tramp. If you’re short on time, a day trip from Nelson or Motueka is doable but you’ll only scratch the surface.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Motueka – 15 minutes south, a lively town with craft breweries, galleries, and the famous Motueka Sunday Market.
- Nelson – 50 minutes south, the sunniest city in NZ, with a vibrant arts scene, wineries, and the World of WearableArt museum.
- Abel Tasman National Park – The park itself is endless; consider staying at one of the DOC huts or campsites for a multi-day adventure.
- Golden Bay & Farewell Spit – A scenic drive over Takaka Hill leads to wilder beaches, the Grove Scenic Reserve, and the bird sanctuary at Farewell Spit.
- Kahurangi National Park – For serious hikers, the Heaphy Track starts near Collingwood, offering a 4-6 day tramp through diverse landscapes.
