Kaikōura

Perched on a rugged stretch of the South Island’s east coast, Kaikōura is a place where the mountains truly meet the sea. The Seaward Kaikōura Range rises dramatically behind the town, while the Pacific Ocean teems with marine life just offshore. This is one of New Zealand’s premier spots for whale watching – sperm whales are year-round residents – and you’re equally likely to spot fur seals, dusky dolphins, and albatross. The town itself has a relaxed, coastal vibe with excellent seafood (the crayfish is legendary) and a fascinating Māori history tied to the great navigator Kupe.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Two days is ideal to experience Kaikōura’s main attractions without feeling rushed. Spend the first morning on a whale-watching tour (book ahead in peak season) and the afternoon exploring the peninsula walkway and seal colony. On day two, take a dolphin swim or scenic flight for a different perspective, then enjoy a leisurely seafood lunch before heading on. If you’re short on time, a single day can still deliver highlights: choose either a whale watch or a dolphin swim, and combine it with a short walk to the seal colony and a crayfish feed.
