Culverden is a quiet rural service town in North Canterbury, New Zealand, known as the gateway to the Waiau River and the alpine landscapes of the Amuri Basin. Surrounded by sheep and dairy farms, it offers a genuine slice of Kiwi country life, with easy access to trout fishing, jet boating, and hiking in the nearby mountains. The town itself is small but welcoming, with a handful of cafes and a historic pub that make for a pleasant stop on a South Island road trip.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Culverden itself is small and can be explored in an hour or two, but it's best used as a base for outdoor activities in the surrounding area. Allow at least half a day for fishing or a jet boat ride on the Waiau River, and consider a full day if you plan to hike in Lake Sumner Forest Park or visit Hanmer Springs. Many travellers pass through on a self-drive itinerary between Christchurch and Kaikōura, stopping for a meal or a quick look.
