Pedal through paradise on the Tasman Great Taste Trail, a 175-kilometre cycle route that weaves together sun-drenched vineyards, craft breweries, and the sparkling shores of Tasman Bay. This isn't just a bike ride—it's a gourmet journey through New Zealand's fruit bowl, where you can stop for fresh oysters, artisan chocolate, and world-class Sauvignon Blanc straight from the source. The trail is mostly flat and well-signposted, making it accessible for families and casual riders, with electric bike hire widely available in Nelson and Mapua.
Highlights & What to See
- Nelson – Start or finish in the sunny city, home to the Nelson Market (Saturdays) and a thriving craft beer scene at spots like McCashin's Brewery.
- Mapua Wharf – A revitalised hub with waterfront cafes, a weekend farmers' market, and the famous Smokey's seafood takeaway.
- Kaiteriteri – Golden sand beaches and turquoise waters; take a side trip to Abel Tasman National Park for a coastal walk or kayak.
- Moutere Hills Vineyards – Pedal through rolling vineyards and stop for tastings at Neudorf Vineyards or Moutere Hills Winery.
- Motueka – A laid-back town with a Saturday market, craft breweries, and the gateway to Golden Bay.
- Upper Moutere – Quaint German-settler village with a historic pub and artisan cheese makers.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 2–4 days to cycle the full loop comfortably, staying overnight in Mapua, Motueka, or Kaiteriteri. Most riders complete the 80 km main loop (Nelson–Mapua–Motueka–Kaiteriteri–Nelson) in 1–2 days, but the full trail extends to Golden Bay and Takaka. If you're short on time, the section from Nelson to Mapua (about 40 km) makes a perfect half-day ride with plenty of food stops.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Abel Tasman National Park – Combine cycling with a day hike or kayak trip along the pristine coastline; the park's track is easily accessed from Kaiteriteri.
- Golden Bay – Extend your ride to this bohemian enclave with the Te Waikoropupū Springs and Farewell Spit.
- Nelson Lakes National Park – A scenic drive south offers alpine hiking, trout fishing, and glacial lakes.
- Motueka – Use as a base for exploring the Moutere Valley's wineries and the trail's northern leg.
