Nelson Lakes National Park is a pristine alpine wonderland in the northern South Island, where beech forests, clear lakes, and rugged mountains create a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. This park offers a quieter alternative to the more famous national parks, with excellent tramping, fishing, and wildlife spotting opportunities.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake Rotoiti – A stunning glacial lake with a scenic lakeside track, perfect for a gentle walk or a refreshing swim. The jetty at Kerr Bay is a classic photo spot.
- Lake Rotoroa – The larger, more remote sister lake, accessible via a short drive. The Rotoroa Nature Walk offers a serene introduction to the park's birdlife.
- Mount Robert Circuit – A challenging day hike with panoramic views over Lake Rotoiti and the surrounding mountains. The track passes through ancient beech forest and alpine meadows.
- Angelus Hut – A popular backcountry hut set beside a tarn, reached via the steep but rewarding Robert Ridge Track. It's a classic overnight tramping destination.
- Blue Lake (Tinirau) – Claimed to be one of the clearest lakes in the world, fed by snowmelt. It's a multiday tramp from the park, but the water clarity is legendary.
- St. Arnaud – The small village at the park's entrance, with a DOC visitor centre, a café, and holiday homes. It's the hub for all park activities.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 days exploring the park. With one day, you can enjoy a short walk around Lake Rotoiti and a drive to Lake Rotoroa. With two days, add the Mount Robert Circuit or a tramp to Angelus Hut. For a deeper experience, spend three days combining day hikes and a night at a hut. The park is also a great stopover on a South Island road trip, as it's just over an hour's drive from Nelson city.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Nelson – The sunny city offers excellent cafés, galleries, and the famous Saturday market. It's the perfect base before heading into the park.
- Abel Tasman National Park – New Zealand's smallest national park, known for golden beaches and the coastal track. Combine with Nelson Lakes for a diverse nature experience.
- Kaiteriteri – A beautiful beach town with golden sand and clear water, ideal for kayaking and boat trips to Abel Tasman. A great spot to relax after hiking.
- Golden Bay – Home to Farewell Spit, Wharariki Beach, and the artsy town of Takaka. It's a detour worth taking for its wild west coast scenery.
