Kaiteriteri is the golden gateway to Abel Tasman National Park, a place where the sun seems to linger a little longer and the sand glows with a warm, golden hue. This tiny coastal settlement on the South Island's northern coast is cherished for its sheltered beach, crystal-clear waters, and as the launchpad for some of New Zealand's finest coastal walks and kayaking adventures. It's the kind of spot where you'll kick off your shoes, feel the sand between your toes, and instantly slip into holiday mode.
Highlights & What to See
- Kaiteriteri Beach – A stunning crescent of golden sand, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and launching kayaks. The gentle waves and safe swimming conditions make it ideal for families.
- Abel Tasman National Park – The main reason most people come. Take a water taxi to one of the park's pristine beaches and walk sections of the Abel Tasman Coast Track, or kayak along the coastline to spot seals and birdlife.
- Split Apple Rock – A bizarre, perfectly split granite boulder just offshore, easily viewed from the beach or on a kayak trip. It's one of the area's most photographed landmarks.
- Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park – A network of purpose-built trails winding through native bush, offering rides for all abilities with rewarding views over the bay.
- Scenic Cruises & Water Taxis – Hop on a boat tour to explore the national park's hidden coves, granite cliffs, and wildlife-rich islands. Many services also offer hop-on-hop-off options for walkers.
- Mārahau – Just south of Kaiteriteri, this laid-back village is another access point for Abel Tasman and has a lovely estuary walkway.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 days in Kaiteriteri, using it as a base to explore Abel Tasman National Park. If you're short on time, a day trip from Nelson or Motueka is feasible, but you'll want at least a full day to take a water taxi, walk a section of the track, and enjoy the beach. For a more relaxed pace, stay overnight and combine a kayak trip with a sunset stroll along the sand.
