Golden Bay lives up to its name: a shimmering crescent of golden sand, lapped by turquoise waters, backed by lush bush-clad hills. This is the remote, relaxed sibling of Abel Tasman National Park, where time slows and nature takes centre stage. The drive over Takaka Hill is an adventure in itself, with sweeping views that hint at the laid-back paradise below.
Highlights & What to See
- Te Waikoropupū Springs – Among the clearest springs in the world, with an otherworldly blue-green hue and ancient Māori significance. A short boardwalk leads to the main pool.
- Farewell Spit – A 35km sandspit that's a bird sanctuary and geological wonder. Join a guided tour to explore its dunes, lighthouse, and seal colonies.
- Wharariki Beach – Wild, windswept and utterly stunning, with sea arches, rock islands and playful fur seals. Best at sunset or low tide.
- Abel Tasman National Park – The park's golden beaches and coastal track are easily accessed from Golden Bay's eastern edge; take a water taxi to secluded coves.
- Takaka – The bohemian hub of Golden Bay, with artisan galleries, organic cafes, and the quirky Mussel Inn for local craft beer.
- Anatoki Salmon – A working salmon farm where you can catch your own lunch and have it smoked on the spot.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give Golden Bay at least two full days to soak up its magic. One day for the main sights around Takaka and Farewell Spit, another for a walk or kayak in Abel Tasman. If you're a hiker or photographer, add an extra day for Wharariki Beach and the quieter trails. The drive from Nelson takes about 1.5 hours, so factor that in.
