Straddling the lower North Island, Manawatū-Whanganui is a region of dramatic contrasts where the mighty Whanganui River carves through deep gorges, rolling farmland meets the rugged Tararua Range, and vibrant university cities like Palmerston North sit alongside the heritage-rich river town of Whanganui. This is a place where you can paddle a historic river trail, explore Māori cultural sites, and sample artisan foods – all without the crowds of more famous destinations.
Highlights & What to See
- Whanganui River Journey – Paddle or jet-boat through the Whanganui National Park on one of New Zealand's Great Walks (actually a river journey). The 'Bridge to Nowhere' and Māori rock art at Tāngonge are unforgettable.
- Whanganui Town – A treasure trove of Victorian and Edwardian architecture, with the Sarjeant Gallery, the Durie Hill Elevator, and the vibrant Saturday riverside market.
- Palmerston North – The region's hub, with the excellent Te Manawa museum, the New Zealand Rugby Museum, and the sprawling Victoria Esplanade gardens and aviary.
- Tongariro National Park – A short drive south, this dual World Heritage area offers the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, one of the world's best day hikes.
- Manawatū Gorge – While the road is closed, the surrounding tracks and viewpoints (like the Manawatū Gorge Walkway) offer stunning views of the rugged cleft.
- Feilding – A classic country town with a well-preserved main street and a famous Saturday farmers' market.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give the region at least 3–4 days to do it justice. Spend two days exploring Whanganui town and the river – including a full day for the Whanganui River Journey (or a shorter jet-boat trip). Then devote a day to Palmerston North and its surrounds, and a final day for a hike in the Tararua Range or a drive south to Tongariro. If you're self-driving, the region is a perfect two-night stop between Wellington and Taupō.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Taranaki – Head west to the majestic Mount Taranaki and the surfing town of New Plymouth.
- Taupō – North to the lake and the Huka Falls, with geothermal wonders en route.
- Wellington – South to the capital for museums, coffee, and the ferry to the South Island.
- Hawke's Bay – East to Napier and Hastings for Art Deco architecture and world-class wineries.
- Ruapehu – The volcanic peaks of Tongariro National Park, with skiing in winter and hiking in summer.
