On the volcanic slopes of Mount Ruapehu, Whakapapa Ski Field is New Zealand's largest ski area, offering a surreal blend of alpine adventure and raw volcanic landscape. With the summit often cloaked in cloud and the dark lava flows contrasting against white snow, it feels like skiing on another planet. The field caters to all levels, from gentle beginner slopes to challenging black runs, and the iconic Sky Waka gondola lifts you to 2,300 metres for panoramic views of the Central Plateau.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a full day skiing or snowboarding, arriving early to make the most of the lift pass. If you're staying in nearby accommodation, two days allow you to explore different parts of the mountain and take a break from the crowds. Summer sightseeing via the Sky Waka is also popular, requiring just a couple of hours for the round trip and a meal at the chalet.
