Stretching east from the Rimutaka Hill down to the rugged Cook Strait coast, Wairarapa is a sun-drenched region of rolling vineyards, sleepy country towns, and dramatic coastal cliffs. It’s the perfect escape from Wellington’s wind, offering a slower pace where you can sip world-class Pinot Noir, explore quirky antique shops, and hike through native bush to thundering waterfalls. The region’s name means “glistening waters” – a nod to the vast Lake Wairarapa and the sparkling rivers that carve through its patchwork farmland.
Highlights & What to See
- Martinborough Wine Village – A compact grid of cellar doors where you can bike between vineyards tasting Pinot Noir, Syrah, and aromatic whites. Don’t miss the underground tasting room at Ata Rangi.
- Cape Palliser – Drive to the North Island’s southernmost point, climb the 250-step lighthouse for epic views, and spot the resident fur seal colony basking on the rocks.
- Castlepoint – A dramatic limestone headland with a lighthouse, a natural rock arch, and a beach perfect for a bracing walk. Time your visit for low tide to explore the reef.
- Mount Holdsworth & the Tararua Forest Park – Hike the Atiwhakatu Track to a swingbridge over a crystal-clear river, or tackle the more challenging Powell Hut for panoramic views.
- Greytown – Wairarapa’s prettiest town, lined with Victorian wooden buildings housing artisan bakeries, bookshops, and galleries. Stop for a flat white at the legendary Salute Coffee.
- Lake Wairarapa – A vast, shallow wetland teeming with birdlife. Kayak or birdwatch from the shoreline, especially during the spring migration.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself at least 2–3 days to soak up Wairarapa’s relaxed rhythm. A long weekend works well: spend day one exploring Martinborough’s vineyards, day two on a coastal road trip to Cape Palliser and Castlepoint, and day three wandering Greytown and hiking in the Tararuas. If you’re based in Wellington, you can easily do a day trip to Martinborough, but you’ll miss the region’s wilder edges.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
