Waikanae, a laid-back coastal town on the Kapiti Coast, is your gateway to the wild west coast of the lower North Island. With its long stretches of black sand beach, the towering presence of Kapiti Island just offshore, and a relaxed village vibe, it's a perfect spot to pause between Wellington and the central North Island. The town's name means 'the waters of the eel' in Māori, and the Waikanae River meanders through, adding to the serene atmosphere.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors find a full day sufficient to soak up Waikanae's highlights. Start with a morning visit to Kapiti Island (allow at least 4-5 hours including ferry and walk), then spend the afternoon exploring the estuary and Nga Manu Nature Reserve. If you're not doing Kapiti Island, half a day is enough for a beach walk and a wander around town. Waikanae also works well as a lunch stop on a road trip between Wellington and Palmerston North.
