Ruapehu is the heart of the central North Island's volcanic plateau, home to the mighty Mount Ruapehu – the North Island's highest peak and one of its most active volcanoes. This region is a year-round playground for outdoor enthusiasts, offering everything from world-class skiing and snowboarding on the Whakapapa and Tūroa ski fields to epic hiking, mountain biking, and trout fishing in Tongariro National Park. The dramatic alpine scenery, complete with glaciers, crater lakes, and steaming vents, gives the area a rugged, otherworldly feel. Beyond the mountain, small towns like National Park Village and Ohakune provide cozy basecamps with a laid-back, outdoorsy vibe.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

For a quick taste, 2–3 days allows for one major hike or a day on the slopes plus exploring the park. To fully experience the region – including the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (weather permitting) and both ski fields – plan 4–5 days. In summer, you could easily spend a week hiking the Tongariro Northern Circuit or mountain biking the Ohakune Old Coach Road.
