Stretching along the spine of the North Island, Ruahine Forest Park is a wild, untamed wilderness of ancient beech forests, tussock-clad tops, and steep river valleys. This is tramping country at its finest – a place where the only sounds are the wind in the canopy and the call of native birds. For those seeking solitude and a genuine backcountry experience, the Ruahines deliver in spades.
Highlights & What to See
- Dunkirk – Sunrise Hut Track: A classic overnight or long-day tramp through towering red beech forest to a hut perched above the bushline with panoramic views of the park.
- Triangle Hut Route: A challenging but rewarding circuit linking several huts across open tops and through lush valleys – perfect for experienced trampers.
- Wharite Peak: The park's highest point (914 m) accessible via a steep track from the Manawatu Gorge; on a clear day, the view stretches from Mount Taranaki to the Tararua Range.
- Mangahao River Valley: A remote valley with a series of huts and a network of tracks ideal for multi-day trips, featuring swimming holes and birdlife.
- Rangiwahia Hut: One of the park's most popular backcountry huts, set in a beautiful alpine basin surrounded by tarns and tussock.
- Manawatu Gorge Walkway: A shorter, easier walk along the historic gorge with views of the river and native bush – a good taster of the Ruahine landscape.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least two to three days to properly experience the Ruahine Forest Park – this allows for an overnight tramp to one of the backcountry huts, giving you time to soak in the remote atmosphere. Day-trippers can tackle the Dunkirk to Sunrise Hut return (6–8 hours) or the Manawatu Gorge Walkway (1–2 hours). For a longer expedition, plan a 4–5 day circuit linking several valleys and huts. The park is best visited from late spring to early autumn; winter tramping requires serious snowcraft and avalanche awareness.
