Stretching 18 km through the rugged Remutaka Range, the Remutaka Rail Trail is a sublime cycling and walking track that follows the old Wellington-to-Wairarapa railway line. Carved through native forest and steep river gorges, this gentle gradient trail offers a journey into New Zealand's pioneering railway history, with 12 tunnels and numerous viaducts to discover. The air is thick with the scent of damp ferns and the sound of bellbirds, making it a sensory escape just an hour from Wellington.
Highlights & What to See
- Cross Creek Station: Start at the historic railway station, where an old signal box and turntable set the scene for the ride ahead.
- Tunnels and Viaducts: Pedal through 12 hand-dug tunnels (bring a torch!) and over high steel viaducts, including the spectacular Mangatoetoe Viaduct.
- Kaitoke Regional Park: At the northern end, this park offers swimming holes and a picnic spot beside the Hutt River.
- Native Birdlife: Listen for tui, kererū, and the elusive kākā in the regenerating bush.
- Te Mārua Station: A halfway point with a restored railway platform and information panels about the line's history.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a full day for the trail if you're cycling (3–4 hours one way), or break it into a relaxed two-day tramp with an overnight hut stay. Most visitors start at Cross Creek and ride to Kaitoke, then arrange a shuttle back. The gentle grade makes it suitable for families with older children and casual cyclists.
