Pukaha Mount Bruce is a premier wildlife sanctuary and conservation centre in the Wairarapa region, offering an intimate encounter with New Zealand’s most endangered native birds. Set in lush lowland forest, this is one of the best places in the country to see kiwis, kākā, and the striking kōkako in a natural setting. The sanctuary’s dedicated breeding programmes and predator-free enclosures make it a living ark for species on the brink.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for at least half a day (3–4 hours) to enjoy the main aviaries, walking trails, and feeding sessions. Arrive early to catch the 10am kiwi talk and then wander the forest loop. If you’re a keen birder, you could easily fill a full day exploring the longer tracks and repeating the feeding times. The sanctuary is compact enough for a relaxed pace.
