Pipiriki is a tiny settlement at the northern end of the Whanganui River Road, where the river narrows and the surrounding hills close in. This is the gateway to the Whanganui National Park and the start of the legendary Whanganui Journey — one of New Zealand's Great Walks, though you'll be paddling, not hiking. The sense of remoteness is palpable; the only sounds are the river's flow and birdsong. A handful of historic buildings, including the striking St Joseph's Church, hint at the area's Māori and missionary past.
Highlights & What to See
- Whanganui River – paddle, jet-boat, or kayak this sacred awa (river) through deep gorges and lush native forest; the multi-day canoe journey to Whanganui is a bucket-list experience.
- Whanganui River Road – a scenic 79 km drive from Whanganui to Pipiriki, winding along the river with lookout points, historic sites, and charming settlements.
- St Joseph's Church – an elegant wooden church built in 1889, with intricate Māori carvings and stained-glass windows; it's a poignant symbol of early European and Māori interaction.
- Bridge to Nowhere – a short walk from Mangapurua Landing leads to this surreal concrete bridge, built in the 1930s for a failed farming settlement, now engulfed by forest.
- Pipiriki Campground – a basic DOC campground right on the riverbank, perfect for an overnight stop before or after a river trip.
Suggested Time to Spend
If you're driving the Whanganui River Road, allow a full day from Whanganui to Pipiriki and back, with stops. For the Whanganui Journey canoe trip, plan 3–5 days from Pipiriki to Whanganui (or vice versa). Most visitors spend one night at Pipiriki Campground or the nearby DOC huts before setting off on the river.
