Paraparaumu, a laid-back coastal town on the Kāpiti Coast, is your gateway to the wilder side of the lower North Island. With its long golden beach, a quirky vintage shopping scene, and the dramatic Kāpiti Island looming offshore, it’s a spot where you can easily blend a morning wildlife cruise with an afternoon browsing retro treasures. The town has a relaxed, slightly bohemian vibe, and its compact centre makes it a perfect stop on a Wellington-to-Whanganui road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Kāpiti Island – A predator-free nature reserve teeming with native birds, including kākā, takahē, and little spotted kiwi. Take a guided day tour (book ahead) for the best wildlife encounters.
- Paraparaumu Beach – A sweeping stretch of dark sand ideal for walks, kite flying, and watching the sunset over the island. The surf can be strong; swim between the flags.
- Lindale Centre – A foodie hub with a cheese factory, chocolate shop, and craft brewery. Don’t miss the award-winning Kāpiti Ice Cream.
- Southward Car Museum – One of the largest car museums in the southern hemisphere, with over 400 vehicles from vintage classics to muscle cars.
- Paraparaumu Golf Club – A top-ranked links course that’s hosted the New Zealand Open – even if you don’t play, the coastal views are stunning.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find a full day and one night sufficient to soak up the main attractions. Spend the morning on a Kāpiti Island tour (half-day trips are common), then afternoon browsing the beach and Lindale Centre. If you’re not doing the island, half a day is enough for the car museum and a beach walk. Paraparaumu also works well as a lunch stop on a longer journey – the cafés on the main street are excellent.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Whanganui – A historic river city with a vibrant arts scene, about 90 minutes north. Don’t miss the Durie Hill Elevator and the Whanganui Regional Museum.
- Palmerston North – A lively university town with great coffee and the Te Manawa museum complex, an hour’s drive northeast.
- Whanganui River – For a true wilderness experience, take a jet boat or canoe trip on the Whanganui River, a journey through lush native forest and deep gorges.
- Wellington – Less than an hour south by train or car, New Zealand’s capital offers Te Papa museum, craft beer bars, and the cable car.
