Ohakune, a lively alpine town at the southern edge of Tongariro National Park, is the perfect base for year-round adventure. Known as the 'carrot capital' of New Zealand, it offers a quirky contrast to its rugged volcanic surroundings. In winter, it's the gateway to Tūroa Ski Field; in summer, it's a hub for hiking, mountain biking, and exploring the park's dramatic landscapes.
Highlights & What to See
- Tongariro National Park: A UNESCO Dual World Heritage site, with the Tongariro Alpine Crossing as a must-do day hike (summer only).
