Stretching along the western shore of the lower North Island, the Kapiti Coast is a sun-drenched ribbon of golden sands, laid-back beach towns, and a magnificent offshore island sanctuary. With Kapiti Island's rugged silhouette framing the horizon and the Tararua Ranges rising to the east, this is a region where nature and coastal living blend effortlessly. The pace is slower here, the air is clean, and the fish-and-chip shops are legendary.
Highlights & What to See
- Kapiti Island Nature Reserve – A predator-free bird sanctuary accessible by boat from Paraparaumu Beach. Hike to the summit for sweeping views, and listen for the haunting call of the little spotted kiwi.
- Ōtaki River – A popular spot for swimming, kayaking, and picnicking along the braided riverbed. The nearby Ōtaki Beach offers wild, windswept walks.
- Waikanae River – Meander through wetlands and coastal forest on the Waikanae River Walkway, ideal for birdwatching and spotting eels.

Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days allows you to explore the coast at a relaxed pace. Spend a full day on Kapiti Island (book well in advance), another day exploring the beach towns and car museum, and a third for walks along the rivers or a trip to the Tararua foothills. If you're short on time, a day trip from Wellington is feasible, but overnighting lets you catch sunrise over the island.
