Gladstone is a tiny rural settlement in the Manawatu-Whanganui region, best known as the gateway to the spectacular Whanganui River. This is New Zealand at its most unhurried: rolling green hills, quiet country roads, and a strong sense of local farming heritage. There's no town centre to speak of, but the surrounding landscape offers serene river walks, birdlife, and a genuine slice of Kiwi rural life. It's the kind of place you stumble upon while exploring the Whanganui River Road and end up lingering longer than expected.
Highlights & What to See
- Whanganui River Road – One of New Zealand's great scenic drives, this winding road follows the river between Whanganui and Pipiriki, passing through Gladstone. Allow at least half a day to stop at viewpoints, historic sites, and swing bridges.
- Whanganui River – The river itself is the star. Kayak, canoe, or take a jet boat tour to experience the deep gorges and lush native bush. The 'Bridge to Nowhere' is a must-do walk from the river.
- Bush walks and birdlife – Short walks near Gladstone offer chances to see native birds like tui, kererū, and fantails. The Matemateaonga Track starts nearby for serious trampers.
- Local farms and produce – The area is sheep and beef country. Look for roadside stalls selling honey, preserves, or seasonal fruit.
- Historic churches and cemeteries – Small rural churches dot the landscape, reflecting early Māori and European settlement.
Suggested Time to Spend
Gladstone itself is a brief stop – an hour is enough to stretch your legs and soak in the views. However, to properly enjoy the Whanganui River Road and its attractions, budget at least a full day. Many travellers combine it with a trip to Whanganui town, making for a relaxed overnight or two-day detour in the region.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Palmerston North – A larger city with the Te Manawa museum, the Victoria Esplanade gardens, and excellent café culture. It's about an hour's drive from Gladstone.
- Whanganui National Park – Accessible via the river or the Matemateaonga Track, this park offers remote wilderness, tramping, and the famous 'Bridge to Nowhere'.
