Foxton Beach is a laid-back coastal settlement on the southwestern shore of the North Island, where the Manawatu River meets the Tasman Sea. Its vast, dark-sand beach stretches for miles, backed by dunes and the bird-rich estuary of the Manawatu River. This is a place for long walks, windblown picnics, and spotting shorebirds – a quiet escape from the region’s busier spots.
Highlights & What to See
- Foxton Beach Esplanade & Surf Club – The heart of the beach, with a patrolled swimming area in summer and a classic kiwi surf-club vibe.
- Manawatu River Estuary – A significant bird habitat; walk the estuary trails at low tide to see godwits, oystercatchers, and royal spoonbills.
- Foxton Beach Holiday Park – Even if you’re not staying, the park’s beachfront location is perfect for a coffee or ice cream while watching the waves.
- Himatangi Beach – Just south, this wilder stretch of sand is popular for four-wheel driving and surfcasting.
- Foxton Windmill & Dutch Heritage – Inland a few minutes, the town of Foxton has a working Dutch windmill and a small museum celebrating the area’s Dutch settlers.
Suggested Time to Spend
Foxton Beach is a half-day stop or an overnight beach stay. Most visitors spend two to three hours walking the beach and estuary, then grab a bite at the surf club or a nearby café. If you’re into birdwatching or photography, allow a full afternoon – especially around high tide when birds gather. It works well as a lunch break between Palmerston North and Whanganui.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Whanganui – A historic river city 30 minutes north, with a vibrant arts scene, the Whanganui River, and the atmospheric Durie Hill Elevator.
- Palmerston North – The region’s main hub, 30 minutes east, offers the Te Manawa museum, the Victoria Esplanade gardens, and a lively café strip.
- Whanganui River Road – A scenic drive along the river’s edge, with historic settlements, Māori marae, and the Bridge to Nowhere.
