Westport, a rugged coastal town on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, is the gateway to the untamed wilderness of the Buller region. With its wild beaches, dramatic river mouth, and proximity to the Paparoa National Park, Westport offers a raw, off-the-beaten-path experience that contrasts sharply with the polished tourist hubs of the east. The town's history as a coal-mining and gold-rush settlement is still palpable in its weatherboard buildings and the hearty, no-nonsense character of its locals. Here, the roaring Tasman Sea meets lush rainforest, making it a perfect base for exploring caves, seal colonies, and the famous Pancake Rocks.
Highlights & What to See
- Pancake Rocks & Blowholes – Just north at Punakaiki, these limestone formations stack like pancakes, with blowholes erupting at high tide. A short loop walk offers spectacular photo ops.
- Cape Foulwind Walkway – A coastal track leading to a fur seal colony and a lighthouse with panoramic views of the Tasman Sea. Look for Hector's dolphins offshore.
- Buller River – Perfect for jet-boating, kayaking, or simply watching the sunset from the historic Swing Bridge. The river mouth is a prime spot for whitebait fishing in season.
- Charming Creek Walkway – A gentle walk along a historic railway line, through tunnels and over bridges, with waterfalls and native bush.
- Westport's Heritage – The Coaltown Museum tells the story of the region's mining past, while the town's historic buildings and pubs retain a frontier feel.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one full day exploring Westport and its immediate surrounds, though two days allow for a more relaxed pace. Arrive early to tackle the Cape Foulwind Walkway (1–2 hours) before heading north to Punakaiki (30 minutes drive) for the Pancake Rocks. The afternoon can be spent on the Buller River or the Charming Creek Walkway. If you have a second day, venture further into the Paparoa National Park or try a jet-boat ride. Westport is an ideal overnight stop on a South Island road trip between Kaikōura and the glaciers.
