Waitaki Valley

Carved by ancient glaciers and the braided Waitaki River, the Waitaki Valley is a starkly beautiful region where the Southern Alps meet the Pacific. This is a land of dramatic limestone formations, turquoise lakes, and a deep Māori and early European history. As you drive through, you'll encounter quirky Victorian towns, hydroelectric dams, and some of New Zealand's best stargazing skies.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Two to three days is ideal to explore the valley's main sights without rushing. Base yourself in Ōamaru or Omarama and take day trips to the boulders, limestone parks, and lakes. If you're combining with Kaikoura whale watching, add an extra day for the scenic drive south.
