One of the world's great train journeys, the Tranz Alpine Train snakes from Christchurch on the Pacific coast to Greymouth on the Tasman Sea, crossing the Southern Alps in a breathtaking four-and-a-half-hour ride. As you climb from the Canterbury Plains through the Waimakariri River valley, the landscape shifts from patchwork farmland to deep gorges, beech forests, and finally the stark, snow-dusted peaks of Arthur's Pass National Park. The open-air viewing carriage lets you feel the alpine breeze and hear the roar of the river below — it's a sensory immersion into New Zealand's wild heart.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers book the full return trip from Christchurch to Greymouth and back, which takes roughly 9 hours including a short stop in Greymouth. If you're short on time, a one-way journey (4.5 hours) is just as rewarding — you can then self-drive back via the Lewis Pass or Arthur's Pass for a different perspective. For the full experience, combine the train with a night or two on the West Coast.
