Just a short drive north of Kaikōura, the seal colonies offer one of New Zealand's most accessible wildlife encounters. The rocky shoreline teems with New Zealand fur seals, often seen lounging on rocks, playfully swimming in the surf, or nursing their pups. The roar of the Southern Ocean and the salty spray set the scene for a raw, unforgettable experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Ohau Point Seal Colony: A large colony where you can watch seals from a viewing platform – pups are often born here from late November to January.
- Point Kean Seal Colony: Located at the end of the Kaikōura Peninsula, this colony is easily accessible via the Peninsula Walkway; you’ll see seals up close (keep a respectful distance).
- Seal Swim Kaikōura: For a truly immersive experience, join a guided tour to snorkel with playful juvenile seals in their natural habitat.
- Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway: This scenic coastal track passes by several seal colonies, offering stunning views of the ocean and mountains.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can easily visit the seal colonies as a half-day outing from Kaikōura. Spend an hour or two at Ohau Point and another hour exploring the Point Kean colony and the start of the Peninsula Walkway. If you plan to do the full walkway or a seal swim, allocate a full day. The best light for photography is early morning or late afternoon.
