Renwick is a sleepy yet charismatic Marlborough wine village that punches well above its weight. Nestled between the Wairau River and the Richmond Range, it's the epicentre of New Zealand's most famous Sauvignon Blanc country. Unlike the busier town of Blenheim, Renwick offers a more intimate, bike-friendly wine trail where you can pedal from cellar door to cellar door past rows of vines and ancient oaks. The pace is slow, the hospitality warm, and the landscapes are postcard-perfect.
Highlights & What to See
- Wine Trail Cycling: Rent a bike and follow the flat, signposted Renwick Wine Trail, stopping at iconic wineries like Forrest, Wither Hills, and Saint Clair for tastings and platters.
- Marlborough Museum: Dive into the region's winemaking and Māori heritage at this well-curated museum on the edge of town.
- Wairau River Walk: Stroll or cycle along the riverbank, where you can spot birdlife and take in the vineyard-studded plains.
- Local Artisans: Visit the Renwick Cheese & Fine Foods shop for artisanal cheeses, olive oils, and preserves that pair perfectly with your wine haul.
- Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre: A short drive away in Blenheim, this world-class museum displays Sir Peter Jackson's collection of WWI and WWII aircraft in dramatic dioramas.
Suggested Time to Spend
Renwick deserves a full day (or two if you're a keen oenophile). Most visitors spend a morning cycling the wine trail, stopping for lunch at a vineyard restaurant, and then exploring the museum or river walk in the afternoon. To truly savour the region, base yourself in Renwick for two nights and use it as a springboard to explore the wider Marlborough region.
