Wedged between the Tasman Sea and the Paparoa Range, this compact national park is a wonderland of sculpted limestone, lush rainforest, and wild coastline. The park's centerpiece is the incredible Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki, where layered limestone formations resemble stacks of pancakes, blasted by blowholes during high tide. A short walk leads you through dense nikau palm forest to viewpoints overlooking the churning sea—a sensory hit of salt spray, thunderous waves, and the sweet scent of damp earth.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a half-day to a full day exploring the park, focusing on the Pancake Rocks and one or two short walks. If you have time, an overnight stay in Punakaiki allows you to catch sunrise at the rocks and tackle a longer hike like the Pororari River Track. For a deeper experience, consider a two-day visit that includes a guided cave tour and a kayak trip on the Pororari River.
