Kaikōura’s mountainous backbone rises abruptly from the Pacific, offering some of New Zealand’s most dramatic day hikes. The Seaward Kaikōura Range, with its sheer peaks and deep valleys, presents a raw, untamed landscape that rewards hikers with panoramic views of the coast and the Southern Alps. Whether you’re a seasoned tramper or a keen day-walker, the trails here deliver a genuine backcountry experience within easy reach of the township.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Fyffe Track – A challenging 8–10 hour return climb to the 1602 m summit, offering 360° views of the Kaikōura Peninsula, the Ranges, and on clear days, the North Island.
- Hapuku River Track – A less strenuous option that follows the Hapuku River through native beech forest, with opportunities to spot kea and weka.
- Kaikōura Coast Track – A 2–3 day guided walk along the coast and into the foothills, combining marine and mountain scenery.
- Lyell Creek Track – A shorter walk from town up into the hills, perfect for a quick nature fix with views over the bay.
- Backcountry huts – For experienced trampers, routes like the Mount Percival Track lead to DOC huts, offering an authentic overnight adventure.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most day hikes require a full day (6–10 hours), so plan to start early. If you’re short on time, the Lyell Creek Track or lower Hapuku River Track can be done in 2–3 hours. For a comprehensive mountain experience, allow at least two days: one for a major summit hike and one for a coastal or river walk. Overnight trips into the backcountry need 3–4 days.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway – A flat coastal walk with seal colonies and tide pools, a perfect low-effort complement to mountain hiking.
- Whale Watching – After a day on the trails, a boat tour to see sperm whales and dusky dolphins offers a totally different perspective on the region.
- Hundalee Hills – A short drive south, these hills offer quieter trails and farmland views.
- Marlborough Wine Region – About 90 minutes north, the vineyards of Blenheim are a great reward after days of hiking.
