New Zealand's most famous wine region unfurls across the sun-drenched Wairau and Awatere Valleys, a patchwork of neat vineyards stretching to the distant Kaikoura Ranges. The air smells of ripe Sauvignon Blanc and crisp Chardonnay, and the region's reputation is built on these world-class drops. Cycling between cellar doors with a glass in hand is the quintessential Marlborough experience, but the area also offers gourmet food trails, river walks, and a relaxed pace of life that makes it an essential stop on any South Island itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- Brancott Estate Heritage Centre: Perched on a hill with panoramic views, this is where the region's first Sauvignon Blanc vines were planted. Enjoy tastings and a platter on the terrace.
- Cloudy Bay Vineyards: The iconic producer behind New Zealand's most famous wine. The cellar door is sleek and the tasting experience polished.
- Wairau Valley Wine Trail: Pedal or drive along this flat, scenic route lined with dozens of cellar doors, from boutique family outfits to big names like Villa Maria and Saint Clair.
- Awatere Valley Wine Trail: A wilder, less crowded valley with distinctive, herbaceous wines. Stop at the Auntsfield Estate for a historic tasting in a former sheep barn.
- Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre: Sir Peter Jackson's private collection of WWI aircraft, with life-sized dioramas that are as cinematic as his films.
- Wairau River Walk: A peaceful stroll along the braided river, perfect for spotting birds and digesting a long lunch.
- Renwick Town: The laid-back heart of the wine region, with a handful of excellent cafes and the Marlborough Farmers' Market (Sundays).
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least two full days to explore the region properly. One day is enough for a whistle-stop tour of the Wairau Valley's main cellar doors, but you'll want a second day to venture into the Awatere Valley, visit the aviation museum, and linger over a long lunch. Many travellers base themselves in Blenheim or Renwick for 2-3 nights and use it as a relaxing break between Christchurch and the Marlborough Sounds or Kaikoura.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Picton & the Marlborough Sounds: The ferry port for the North Island is a short drive north, offering stunning sea kayaking, hiking the Queen Charlotte Track, and dolphin encounters.
- Blenheim: The region's main town, with a growing food scene, the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre, and the excellent Blenheim Farmers' Market.
- Nelson: An hour west, known for its artisan food scene, golden beaches, and Abel Tasman National Park. Perfect for extending your journey.
