Marahau is the gateway to Abel Tasman National Park, New Zealand's smallest but most beloved national park, known for its golden-sand beaches, clear turquoise waters, and lush coastal forests. This laid-back settlement on the South Island's northern coast offers a relaxed vibe, with kayak hire, water taxis, and a handful of cafés and accommodations. It's the perfect launchpad for exploring the park's stunning coastline, either on foot along the Abel Tasman Coast Track or by sea in a kayak.
Highlights & What to See
- Abel Tasman Coast Track: One of New Zealand's Great Walks, this 60 km track offers incredible coastal scenery, with golden beaches, granite outcrops, and lush native bush. You can walk sections or the whole track, with water taxi options to skip the less interesting parts.
- Kayaking the Coastline: Paddle through the clear waters of the Abel Tasman, exploring secluded coves, seal colonies, and pristine beaches. Guided trips are available from Marahau.
- Anchorage & Bark Bay: Two of the most beautiful beaches along the track, accessible by foot or water taxi. Perfect for swimming, picnicking, and spotting birdlife.
- Kaikoura Whale Watching: While Marahau itself is not in Kaikoura, the region's famous whale-watching tours are a must-do, offering close encounters with sperm whales, dolphins, and seals.
- Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway: A stunning coastal walk with dramatic cliffs, seal colonies, and panoramic ocean views. Best done at sunrise or sunset.
Suggested Time to Spend
Marahau itself can be explored in a day, but to truly experience Abel Tasman, plan for at least 2-3 days. Spend one day kayaking or taking a water taxi to the park's highlights, and another hiking a section of the coast track. If you're short on time, a half-day kayak trip or a walk to Anchorage and back (via water taxi) is a great taster.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Nelson: A vibrant city with a thriving arts scene, craft breweries, and excellent restaurants. It's a short drive from Marahau and a great base for exploring the region.
- Kaikoura: Famous for its whale watching and stunning coastal scenery. Combine a visit to Marahau with a trip to Kaikoura for a diverse South Island experience.
- Golden Bay & Farewell Spit: A wild, remote area with beautiful beaches and bird sanctuaries. Accessible via the Takaka Hill road, but allow a full day.
- Abel Tasman National Park Interior: Beyond the coast, the park offers inland tracks through beech forest, with waterfalls and historic sites.
