Lake Sumner, cradled in the rugged foothills of the Southern Alps, is a pristine alpine gem that rewards those who make the journey. Its turquoise waters, fed by glacial streams, are framed by beech forest and towering peaks, offering a true wilderness escape just a couple of hours from Kaikōura. This is New Zealand backcountry at its finest – quiet, dramatic, and deeply rejuvenating.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake Sumner Track: A multi-day tramp (part of the Te Araroa Trail) that winds along the lake's edge, through ancient forests and across swingbridges. Even a day walk to the lake outlet rewards with stunning views.
- Kayaking & Fishing: The lake's calm, clear waters are perfect for kayaking (BYO gear) and fly-fishing for brown trout. The silence is broken only by birdsong and the lapping of water.
- Wildlife Encounters: Keep an eye out for native birds like kea, kākā, and the rare great spotted kiwi. Dawn and dusk are prime times.
- Alpine Scenery: The drive in alone is an attraction – winding gravel roads through the Hope River valley, with sheer rock faces and braided rivers. Stop at the Hope River Bridge for a photo.
- Camping Under the Stars: Basic Department of Conservation campsites (like Lake Sumner Campsite) offer a raw, immersive experience – no facilities, just pure nature.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day exploring the lake and its surrounds, but to truly soak in the tranquility, plan for an overnight stay. A two-day trip allows for a leisurely paddle, a hike to the lake's headwaters, and an evening by the campfire. If you're short on time, a half-day drive from Kaikōura (allow 2 hours each way) is still worthwhile for the scenery and a short walk.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kaikōura: After the wilderness, head back to the coast for whale watching and the famous Peninsula Walkway – a perfect contrast of marine and mountain.
- Hanmer Springs: Soak tired muscles in the thermal pools of this alpine village, about an hour's drive south.
- Lewis Pass: A scenic route through the Southern Alps, with short walks and hot springs (Maruia Springs) along the way.
- Molesworth Station: New Zealand's largest farm, accessible via a 4WD route from the lake area – a rugged adventure through high-country tussock.
