Kekerengu is a tiny coastal settlement on State Highway 1, halfway between Kaikōura and Blenheim. It’s a classic New Zealand road-trip stop: a handful of buildings, a sweeping pebble beach, and the kind of quiet that makes you want to linger. The big draw here is the Kekerengu Store – a legendary roadside café that’s been feeding hungry travellers for decades. Think homemade pies, excellent coffee, and a sunny deck with views over the Pacific. It’s the perfect spot to stretch your legs and refuel before the next leg of your journey.
Highlights & What to See
- Kekerengu Store – The heart of the settlement. Grab a pie (the venison is a local favourite) and a flat white, then sit on the deck watching the waves roll in.
- Kekerengu Beach – A wild, windswept stretch of greywacke pebbles. It’s not for swimming, but the coastal views and dramatic sea stacks (including the famous ‘Elephant Rocks’) make for a great photo stop or a short walk.
- Whale watching – While Kaikōura is the main hub, the waters off Kekerengu are part of the same marine mammal corridor. Sperm whales, dusky dolphins, and fur seals are often spotted from shore.
- Peninsula Walkway – The Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway, about 30 minutes south, offers stunning cliff-top views and seal colonies. Combine it with a stop in Kekerengu for a full day of coastal exploring.
Suggested Time to Spend
Kekerengu is a quick stop – most people spend 30 minutes to an hour here, enough time for coffee and a walk on the beach. If you’re doing the full Kaikōura-to-Marlborough drive, it’s a natural break point. You could also base yourself nearby for a night or two, using Kekerengu as a quiet alternative to busier Kaikōura town.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kaikōura – Just 30 minutes south, this is the region’s main town, famous for whale watching, seafood, and the stunning Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway.
- Marlborough Sounds – An hour north, the sounds offer endless hiking, kayaking, and wine tours (especially around Picton).
- Blenheim – The heart of Marlborough wine country, 90 minutes north. Perfect for a wine-tasting detour on your way to or from Kekerengu.
- Hanmer Springs – About an hour inland from Kaikōura, this alpine village has hot pools, mountain biking, and bungy jumping.
