Kaikōura is a wildlife wonderland where the mountains meet the sea, and the nutrient-rich waters of the Hikurangi Trench draw an astonishing array of marine life right to the coast. This small town on the east coast of New Zealand’s South Island is world-famous for its sperm whales, dusky dolphins, and New Zealand fur seals, all easily accessible on boat tours or from the shore. The dramatic backdrop of the Seaward Kaikōura Range adds to the spectacle, making every wildlife encounter feel epic.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan at least two full days in Kaikōura to allow for weather-dependent wildlife tours. Most whale-watching trips run for 2–3 hours, and dolphin tours are similar. Spend a morning on the water and the afternoon exploring the peninsula walkway or seal colonies. If you’re short on time, a single day can still include a whale-watch tour and a coastal walk, but you’ll be rushing. Consider staying overnight to enjoy the sunset over the sea.
