Kaikoura Township

Perched between the snowy peaks of the Seaward Kaikōura Range and the wild Pacific Ocean, Kaikōura Township is a small coastal gem that punches well above its weight. The town’s heartbeat is its working wharf, where fishing boats bob alongside seal colonies, and the air smells of salt spray and fresh crayfish. This is New Zealand’s marine capital, a place where the mountains meet the sea in dramatic fashion, and where you can watch sperm whales surface just offshore while snow-capped peaks loom behind you.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

For a thorough visit, plan at least two full days. Day one: morning whale-watch cruise, afternoon Peninsula Walkway. Day two: explore the wharf, visit Fyffe House and the museum, and enjoy a crayfish lunch at a waterfront café. If you’re self-driving the Coastal Pacific Highway, a single overnight stop allows you to hit the highlights, but you’ll wish you had longer.
