Kaikōura is New Zealand’s undisputed marine mammal capital, where the deep Hikurangi Trench brings an abundance of nutrients close to shore, creating a world-class wildlife spectacle. Here you can see sperm whales, dusky dolphins, fur seals, and migrating humpback and blue whales – often just minutes from the coast. The town’s dramatic backdrop of the Seaward Kaikōura Range adds to the sense of being on the edge of something wild and wonderful.
Highlights & What to See
- Whale watching: Join a boat tour to see giant sperm whales year-round – they dive for up to 45 minutes, so patience is rewarded with breathtaking surface views. Also keep an eye out for humpbacks (June–July) and orcas (December–March).
- Dusky dolphin encounters: Kaikōura’s resident dusky dolphins perform acrobatic leaps and spins. Swim with them on a guided tour, or watch from a boat as they bow-ride.
- New Zealand fur seals: The Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway offers close-up views of a large seal colony – pups are born in summer and are endlessly entertaining as they play in rock pools.
- Albatross and seabirds: The same nutrient-rich waters attract albatross, petrels, and shearwaters. A pelagic birding tour is a must for bird enthusiasts.
- Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway: This scenic coastal track (about 3 hours return) passes seal colonies, limestone formations, and offers panoramic views of the ocean and mountains – best at sunrise or sunset.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least two full days to Kaikōura’s marine mammals. On day one, take a morning whale-watching tour (allow 2.5–3 hours) and spend the afternoon walking the Peninsula Walkway. On day two, join a dolphin-swim or birding tour in the morning, then relax with a fresh local crayfish lunch. If you have only a day, choose either whales or dolphins – both experiences are unforgettable but require separate time slots.
