Kaikōura is New Zealand’s undisputed marine mammal capital, where the deep Hikurangi Trench brings an abundance of nutrients close to shore, creating a world-class wildlife spectacle. Here you can see sperm whales, dusky dolphins, fur seals, and migrating humpback and blue whales – often just minutes from the coast. The town’s dramatic backdrop of the Seaward Kaikōura Range adds to the sense of being on the edge of something wild and wonderful.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate at least two full days to Kaikōura’s marine mammals. On day one, take a morning whale-watching tour (allow 2.5–3 hours) and spend the afternoon walking the Peninsula Walkway. On day two, join a dolphin-swim or birding tour in the morning, then relax with a fresh local crayfish lunch. If you have only a day, choose either whales or dolphins – both experiences are unforgettable but require separate time slots.
